I am Noah Hampshire, the Secretary-General for the third year of Scripps Ranch MUN's annual conference. I am incredibly excited to present delegates this year with a variety of interesting topics that will no doubt stimulate rich debate among all levels of experience, from middle school delegates to advanced high schoolers.
Model United Nations is an organization that has had a remarkable impact on myself and countless other young individuals around the world, but it is particularly important for high school and even middle school students, as it cultivates an early awareness of today's geopolitical struggles, and promotes a sense of empathy for people of any nation. Additionally, the sense of empowerment that delegates are able to feel by vigorously debating the issues of today with their peers is unmatched by any other program. That is why I am so proud to provide that experience to the many delegates that will attend this year's iteration of ScrippsMUN.
Now more than ever, the world is struggling to meet the United Nation's sustainability goals, as the current direction of the environment is dire. Both the Food and Agriculture Organization and the UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization's topics place an emphasis on sustainability, on a macro scale, discussing multilateral economic trade, and a micro scale, regarding the plight of indigenous cultures. It is imperative that delegates are made aware of these issues, so it is my hope that ScrippsMUN can increase awareness and push our delegates to not just debate, but to do more.
With those points in mind, I am excited to begin a conference of quality and substance that will provide all levels of delegates with all that Model United Nations offers and more. Please enjoy, and thank you for choosing to attend ScrippsMUN.
Best Wishes, Noah Hampshire Secretary-General ScrippsMUN 2020
Hello, Scripps MUN! My name is Frederic O’Hara, a 16 year old junior at Scripps Ranch High School. This is my third year affiliated with my school’s MUN club, and third year as a part of our Scripps MUN conference. In my freshman year I was a delegate for our historical crisis committee, last year I got to be a vice-chair for the HS UNESCO committee, and this year I have the pleasure of serving as the USG of External Communications for Scripps MUN 2020, as well as head chair of our HS UNESCO committee. I have also attended a variety of other high school and college-hosted MUN conferences from around Southern California as a delegate, or occasionally a staffer, with varying degrees of award success, but invariable good times. I have a tendency to prefer staffing and debating any legal-based committees and topics, though the occasional fun historical crisis committee can also bring a smile to my face. Outside of MUN, I enjoy a plethora of other activities. I am the co-president of Scripps Ranch’s mock trial team, which uses a lot of overlapping debate and public-speaking-based skills. I also participate in our schools Quizbowl (also known as Academic League) club, which is a team-based academic trivia competition, as it fits very well with my habit of reading random articles on Wikipedia and YouTube; it overlaps with MUN in that it rewards knowledge of world affairs and politics, past and present. I also volunteer at my local library, primarily in planning and helping out at children’s events, which can be surprisingly similar to planning MUN conferences in certain ways. Anyway, I look forward to seeing you all in February!
Hi, my name is Dylan Tran, and I’m a senior at Scripps Ranch High School. This is my second year on the Upper Secretariat for Scripps MUN. I have participated in Model UN for 6 years, and I am the President of the Model UN Club at Scripps Ranch High School. I have tons of MUN experience, earning multiple awards, and serve as the Assistant Secretary-General for SDRJMUN Sessions XLII and XLIII. I remember the first year of Scripps MUN, it was a small conference made up of one or two committee. Last year we had three committees, with about 50 delegates. Seeing it grow into what it is today is extraordinary. Now, we have 5 committees and I can’t wait to see how this continues to grow. See you there!
